Walter Whitley, "apparent age" 19 years 3 months, enlisted in the 20th (Service) Battalion Manchester Regiment (5th City) on 5 Jun 1915. He enlisted "for the duration of the war, at the end of which you will be discharged with all convenient speed." On 7 Jun 1915 he joined at Heaton Park, on 9 Nov 1915 he was part of the Expeditionary Force - France, and he was killed in action on 1 Jul 1916.
