- The chart prints the word "Batum" under his name, in guillemets, as though it were
a byname - presumably Batumi on the Black Sea, then in the Russian Empire and a
major oil and export port after 1883. The reason for the nickname is not explained
in the book. Worth chasing: a Swiss commercial family with a son in Batumi in the
1880s or 1890s is a story in itself.
