- THE PIASECZNY MURDER. Henry Piaseczny, Emily's brother (age 12 in the 1930 census, Cypress St, Manchester), a former sporting goods store owner, was found dead in his home in Manchester on 3 September 1977 with a shotgun wound to the head; the death was ruled a suicide. His daughter then petitioned the Hillsborough County Superior Court to have the body examined again. A new autopsy by forensic pathologist Dr. George Katsas found a second gunshot wound, to the chest, from a .22-caliber weapon, and that Henry had died by 'other than lawful means'; detectives travelled out of state to interview people who knew him (UPI: Valley News, West Lebanon NH, 7 Oct 1977 p22; Brattleboro Reformer 8 Oct 1977 p8).
The daughter, Susan Piaseczny Hughes, was tried for his murder, pleaded insanity and in 1978 was committed to the New Hampshire Hospital in Concord. On a Saturday in June 1980 she escaped; the hospital called her 'unstable' and 'potentially dangerous' (UPI: Valley News 16 Jun 1980 p9, 'Escapee Sought'). She was arrested on 30 July 1980, shortly after her release, and charged with obtaining a controlled drug by fraud; in January 1983 the NH Supreme Court ruled 3-2 that the 68-day delay in indicting her was reasonable (Concord Monitor 27 Jan 1983 p5; Biddeford ME Journal Tribune same day).
Family tradition (Craig, probably via his father from Dinny and Emily): one of Emily's brothers, who owned a boat yard, killed his wife and went to prison - Dinny moonlighting to run the boat yard - and his daughter shot him the day he got out, a story so bizarre it was written up in the New Yorker. The newspapers confirm a daughter killing her father; nothing has been found for a wife-killing, a prison term, the release-day shooting or a New Yorker piece. When Craig asked Emily about it in 2010-11 she said sweetly, 'Oh, we don't talk about that any more.'
An unrelated case: on 22 Dec 1955 Mrs. Ann Piaseczny, 33, of Hooksett, wife of chicken farmer Isadore Piaseczny, was shot by a neighbour, Mrs. Theresa Louise Zela, who was found insane (Concord Monitor 22 Dec 1955 p1, 20 Jan 1956 p1).
