 | Portrait of Mary Kate (Vahey) Walsh - oil, by Ethel R. Foster, 1938 Oil on canvas, signed upper right 'E R Foster '38' (initials run together; signature partly hidden under the frame until Craig moved the canvas in April 2024). Mary was about 39. Family tradition: an art teacher at the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences, where Mary worked as a maid, painted her. Her husband Dudley was the Institute's caretaker (1942 draft card; 1940 census 'art gallery'). The artist is identified as Ethel Robinson Foster (1881-1963) of Concord, NH - Art Students League, charter member of the New Hampshire Art Association, exhibited at the Manchester Institute and the Currier Gallery; her photograph collection is at the New Hampshire Historical Society. Correspondence with Karen Papineau, Currier Museum, March-April 2024.
Provenance: kept by Dudley's son Dinny and his wife Emily, who - by her own account - could not stand looking at it. On one of Craig's visits to Manchester Emily pulled it out of a closet and said that, as Mary's grandson, he should have it. It now hangs at the end of Craig and Marjorie's hallway in Honolulu, where he sees it many times a day and loves it.

 | Rachel Morris King - Crypt Status: Located; I was born and grew up in Hawaii. Whenever we visited San Francisco, my grandmother would always want to go and visit the grave of her mother (Rachel Morris King). As kids we never wanted to do this, and never went to the grave: kids don't like visiting graves. My grandmother would lament that once she'd died, nobody would remember where her mother, Rachel, was buried.
But my grandmother did not foresee the internet, and how it helps us to research everything -- including our ancestry. I became interested in genealogy simply because I wanted to find Rachel's grave.
I found it, and my wife and I visited it for the first time today. We brought red carnations.

 | Recording of Albert Wilkinson - 1961 This recording was made by Albert "Baba" Wilkinson in 1961, three months after he retired from the Bank of Hawaii. It was made on reel-to-reel tape, and hasn't been played since it was recorded. We kept it, safe, for 51 years. We had it professionally digitized in 2012, and when I first played it I was struck by the fact that "Baba" was 65 years old, and he was now speaking to me (it sounded like he was in the room with me) -- and I am now almost 63 years old. -- CWW

 | Revolutionary War Rolls - Amount due to the men of Dearborn's Company - John Ray - Page 217 "The above is a True Roll of the Company that March'd from Cambridge [Massachusetts] to Quebec with me in the year 1775. Henry Dearborn, Capt."
According to Wikipedia: "In September 1775, Benedict Arnold led a force of 1,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition through the wilderness of what is now Maine that was part of a two-pronged invasion of the British Province of Quebec. The other expedition, led by Richard Montgomery, invaded Quebec from Lake Champlain.
"Arnold's expedition was a success in that he was able to bring a body of troops to the gates of Quebec City. However, the expedition was beset by troubles as soon as it left the last significant outposts of civilization in Maine. There were numerous difficult portages as the troops moved up the Kennebec River, and the boats they were using frequently leaked, spoiling gunpowder and food supplies. The height of land between the Kennebec and the Chaudière River was a swampy tangle of lakes and streams, where the traversal was complicated by bad weather; one quarter of the troops turned back at this point. The descent down the Chaudière resulted in the destruction of more boats and supplies as the inexperienced troops were unable to control the boats in its fast-moving waters.
"By the time Arnold reached the outskirts of civilization along the Saint Lawrence River in November, his force was reduced to 600 starving men. They had traveled over almost 400 miles through untracked wilderness. This did not prevent Arnold's troops, with assistance from the local Canadiens, from crossing the Saint Lawrence on November 13 and 14, and attempting to put Quebec City under siege. Failing in that effort, Arnold withdrew to Point-aux-Trembles until Montgomery arrived to lead an attack on the city."
