Captain William CRUMPLER I

was born about 1680. He died between Oct 1750 and 1775 in Southampton County, VA.(19) He signed a will on 29 Oct 1750 in Southampton County, VA. "I give unto my son John Crumpler the plantation I live on ___ said land containing one hundred acres, more or less ___ also 65 acres being part of a survey of 130 acres divided by a line of marked trees." (John must have been the youngest son to have received the home place. Son William must have been the older and was married, received his main inheritance at time of marriage.) To son William he wills, "the remaining portion of those two tracts for grandson William." He also left to William's daughter, Sila, a feather bed, furniture, two pewter dishes, to pewter basins, and two plates. He had an estate probated on 14 Feb 1775 in Southampton County, VA. William Crumpler, Sr. born Abt. 1680, Virginia, married 23-Jun-1724, in Isle of Wright County, Virginia, Elizabeth Raiford, (daughter of Philip Wreyford and Fortune ?). William died Oct-1750, Southampton County, Va. William Crumpler is first mentioned in Isle of Wright County, Virginia, when he bought 100 acres of land on Blackwater Swamp from William Carver on June 8, 1692. He bought 45 acres more from William Carver in 1697/98. On September 11, 1700, he and his wife, Elizabeth, sold 50 acres of land he owned on Blackwater Swamp. In October od 1700, he again bought 350 acres of land from William Carver, and on March 29, 1703, he bought 200 acres of land from George Williamson. On June 16, 1714, William Crumpler received 270 acres on the south side of Blackwater Swamp for importing six persons into this country, which included himself. He continued to buy land on Blackwater Swamp with the purchase of 130 acres on July 12, 1718. On July 23, 1724, Philip Raiford made his will and named "my loving brother-in-law William Kinchen and my loving brother-in-law William Crumpler, Trustees." William Russell Raiford in his "The History of the Raiford Family" stated: "We know from other records of Isle of Wright County that William Kinchen married Elizabeth Ruffin, daughter of Robert Ruffin of Surry County. According to Chapman's Isle of Wright Marriages, William Kinchen also married Elizabeth Joyner, daughter of Thomas Joyner, whose will, dated August 13, 1734, was probated July 28, 1735. We may conclude with plausible probility that Philip Raiford had a sister, Elizabeth (who married William Crumpler), and that the wife of Philip Raiford, whose name was Sarah, was a sister of William Kinchen." William's wife, Elizabeth was the daughter of Philip and Fortune Wreyford, and the grand-daughter of Elias Wreyford. An Elizabeth Wreyford was baptized February 8, 1647 at Crediton Church in Devon, England, which is located only five miles north of Exeter. This seems a little old for our Elizabeth, but could still possibly be her. William is listed as a vestryman of Benn's Church in Smithfield, Virginia. He made his will in Southampton County, Virginia on October 24, 1750, and it was recorded February 14, 1751. Evidently Elizabeth was already dead as she wasn't mentioned. Children were:

i. William CRUMPLER II was born about 1700 in Isle of Wight County, VA. He signed a will on 7 Aug 1761 in Southampton County, VA. Will Book I

Mentions bequests to "my son Bessant, Elizabeth, Dorothy Brock, Benjamin, ___ all the remainder of my Estate I give to my loving wife Elizabeth Crumpler during her life and after death equally divided between son John and my six daughters, Sarah, Eliza Woodland, Lucy Crumpler, Cherry Crumpler and Mary Crumpler. Wife Elizabeth and son Bessant sole Executors. Will probated in Southhampton County. Son John was to supervise property of his young sisters. Because the girls names in this will have been carried on in Sampson County, I believe this William to be father of John who came to NC prior to 1747." William Stacy Crumpler He died before 11 Nov 1771 in Southampton County, VA. (20) He had an estate probated on 11 Nov 1771 in Southampton County, VA.
"Crumpler" is an occupational name for the Old English cromphet - a flat, thin cake which was often fried on a griddle. In Medieval England, the Cromplers or Crumplers made and sold these "crompied cakes." They were favorite items at county fairs, market days and festivals, similar to our doughnuts today. Tea and crumpets are the favorite afternoon snack in England and Scotland even today.

32. Sheriff John CRUMPLER Jr. was born about 1730 in Isle of Wight County, VA. He owned 110 acres in May 1757 in Duplin County, NC. Land Grant Book I
"From Henry Easterling to John Crumpler of the Province of North Carolina and Duplin County, for 20 pounds gold, 110 acres of land on Moccoson Branch on this side of Cohary, beginning at a Spanish Oak ---. From patent Grant of His Excellency Arthur Dobbs, Esquire, Governor and Commander-in-Cheif, on the date of May 1757."

When Sampson County was formed in 1784 from Duplin County, this property was in Sampson County.
He was a Sheriff between 1765 and 1782 in Duplin County, NC. He signed a will on 7 Feb 1782 in Duplin County, NC.(15) (16) Son John, one of the executors named in the Will, appeared before the court and qualified by "taking oathe of an Executor." Named children: Jacob, John, Rachel (or Grace Rachel), Sarah, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Cajah. Jacob was married at that time. John, the next son was possibly still single. He was to look after the interests of the younger siblings. Rachel was surely not of age; to wit: "I give my daughter Rachel Crumpler five cows and calves to be paid her at age 21, or married, if the stock be sufficient for all the rest of her younger brethren --- and ten pounds of silver or gold." It would appear that young John's hundreds of acres of land was not noly for himself, but prooportionately for the younger siblings. In addition, each of the younger ones were to receive certain household goods, farming equipment, cattle and ten pounds of gold or silver. ---- William Stacy Crumpler






Witnessed by Arthur Coor, Daniel Coor, and William Wiggs. Proved in April 1782. He died in Apr 1782 in Duplin County, NC.(17) He had an estate probated in Jul 1782 in Duplin County, NC. First Crumpler to settle in Sampson County, NC which was still a part of Duplin County at the time of his settlement prior to 1757.

John Crumpler was a documented Patriot of the American Revolution and his descendants can join the DAR under his name.

John Crumpler probably migrated to Duplin County about 1755 ( when he witnessed a deed from Michael Taylor to Robert Allen. He witnessed another deed between Robert Allen and Robert Butler July 13, 1756. He is believed to have come directly from the Isle of Wright, Virginia. John received a land patent for 200 acres in Duplin County on the west side of the Coherey River on March 17, 1756 and another for 150 acres in the same general area on May 26, 1757. He received another one October 23, 1761, for 300 acres in Duplin County ajoining his own property. During the Revolutionary War, John aided the cause by furnishing supplies to the revolutionary forces. He was issued vouchers No. 63 and 97. John Crumpler died early in 1782 and his will was probated in Duplin County in April 1782. The will is recorded in Will Book 1, page 8, of the Duplin County records. By the year 1812, this family had acquired vast acreage west of the Little and Big Cohaire Creeks in Sampson County, as it was known then.
He was married to Nancy HOLMES in 1749 in Isle of Wight County, VA.

In The Name of God Amen

I, John Crumpler of The County of Duplin in the State of North Carolina Yoeman being weak in Body but of sound mind and memory blessed be God for it and calling to mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my Body to be buried in the Earth at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me in this life I give and dispose of the same in manner and form following that is to say Imprimus—

Item: I give to my son Jacob Crumpler the plantation whereon he now lives ( ) I bought of Pircybell Clay containing one hundred acres lying on Bearskin Swamp and the cattle he formerly was possessed of and one bed that is now in the possession of Elihu Wiggins and one black mair and coalt to him and his heirs forever—

Item: I give to my son John Crumpler a mesuage or tract of land containing two hundred and thirty acres on both sides the road joining Benj’n Williams land and Crumplers Marsh also another peace of land lying on Magason Branch containing one hundred acres also another peach of land containing three hundred and twenty acres it being part of an entry of six hundred and forty acres lying on both side Hauls Branch whereof Lazarus Haul is to have 320 acres and my son John and J’d Haul to make a line between themselves when the patent is obtained and for my Executors to make him a Deed for the same also a stock of cattle now in the ( ) of William Laton also I leave the USE of the plantation and my Negros whereon I now live to my said son John for to raise my children thereon and also one feather bed—

Item: I give my daughter Rachel Crumpler five cows and calves to be paid for at the age of twenty one or married if the stock be sufficient for all the rest of her younger Brethren to have as many and if not to have an Equal Share of what there is at such a time and ten pounds in silver or gold and a feather bed and sheet—

Item: I give to my Daughter Sarah Crumpler five cows and calves if the stock be sufficient at such time as has been before mentioned and ten pounds in gold or silver and a feather Bed Rug and sheet—

Item: I give to my Daughter Nancy Crumpler five cows and calves if the stock be sufficient at such a time or to have as has been before mention and ten pounds in gold or silver and thirty five pounds of feathers—

Item: I give to my Daughter Elizabeth Crumpler five cows and calves if the stock be sufficient at such time and if not to have an Equal Share at such time as aforementioned and a Negro woman called Rose and the first child She Ever brings and a feather bed Rug and sheet and the rest of her Increase I leave to be Equally divided amongst the Rest of my Daughters—

Item: I give to my son Cajah Crumpler the plantation whereon I now live containing two hundred acres and another messuage of land containing one hundred acres adjoining the former Magason Swamp and a other hundred acres joining that and William Boykins land and another hundred acres on the East Side of Daniels Branch also a Negro Boy named Seacar and five cows and calves and a feather bed Rug and Sheet—and half the sheet that is at Ephraim Emanuels of my stock I give to my son Jacob and the remainder of all the rest of my sheet I leave to be equally divided between all my children Except Jacob & Grace and all the remainder of my Estate household goods and moveable I have to be Equaly Divided between my children Grace Rachel Sarah Elizabeth Nancy and Cajah. Buried:
"Buried in woollen" refers to the Burial in Woollen Acts of 1667 & 1678. These Acts were attempts to protect the English Wool Trade, and required that all bodies should be buried in wool with the exception of those who died from the plague. A £5.00 fine was imposed for burials which did not comply with the Acts. If a family were poor and could not afford a woollen shroud, the entry in the register may have the word 'naked' written in it. The law stayed in force until 1814 but was usually ignored after 1770.
