A Torquay woman has celebrated her 100th birthday, and says that she attributes her longevity to 'never smoking, being teetotal and not having children'. Violet Jean More, or Jean as she likes to be known, celebrated her 100th birthday at St Omer Residential Home in Chelston surrounded by her friends and family; included two family members who had made lengthy trips from Australia and the USA to be there.
Jean was born near Winchester on February 27, 1917, where her parents owned and ran a very successful petrol and car repair garage. Her young life as an only child was a happy one; as a bright intelligent young girl she was offered a place at the local grammar school which she turned down as she preferred to attend the local secondary school with her best friend Eileen.
Living and working in a garage, Jean soon learnt all the skills necessary to run an efficient office, managing the books, pay, accountancy and every aspect of a successful business.
It was while working in the garage that Jean met her future husband Stanley. He was a keen motorbike rider and would regularly call in. When he plucked up the courage to ask Jean's father if he could 'walk out' with his daughter, the courtship began and soon developed into a serious relationship.
After their marriage, Stan became a very important member of the team working in the garage. He proved to be a very competent and skilled mechanic, as well as an extremely engaging person with the customers. The garage soon became well known for good reliable service, going from strength to strength. When WWII broke out, the army decided they needed this garage for their fuel and repairs, so the family did their part for the country.
Stan had originally come from Devon and many family holidays were enjoyed in Torquay so when a big fuel company made a substantial bid for the Winchester garage, the decision was made to accept and to retire in Torquay. The whole family moved to Devon, including Jean parents and Stan's parents. They bought bungalows next door to each other, living out their retirement together enjoying the area.
Jean supported and nursed her elderly family until their end, as well as her beloved Stan. She lived independently and happily in her own home until late 2015 when she moved into St Omer Residential Home in Chelston.
When asked how she had reached her 100th birthday, she said: "I never smoked, was teetotal and had no children." |
