James Wilkinson and His Patented Can Transfer Valve
James joined the Hawaiian Pineapple Co., Ltd. in 1929, and became superintendent of the syruping and double-steaming department in 1936. He invented a can transfer valve, and the patent (2,220,137) was filed on 18 May 1937 and assigned to American Can Company.

According to the patent itself, "The present invention relates to a acan treating machine having a rotatable transfer valve with can and cover carrying pockets such as utilized in a can closing or sealing machine and has particular refrence to fevices located in the valve pockets for holding a cover superimposed upon a can to prevent spilling of the can contents while the can is in the valve. An object of the invention is the provision of a can closing machine or the like having a rotatable transfer valve formed with can pockets, wherein covers carried in the valve pockets in superimposed relation relatives to the cans therein, are positively forced into tight engagement with the cans by yieldable presser fingers also located within the can pockets thus preventing spilling of the can contents during rotation of the valve and transfer of the cans."

This is James' card. The official card, from the government archives, is also included here. It's interesting how the family archives and the government archives have kept their versiions of the same documents, and they've been put together 90 years later.

All I have are the following: Albert Wilkinson [09/03/1912 to 06/06/1913] Junior Year - Grade 11; Charles Wilkinson [09/05/1922 to 06/15/1923] Freshman Year - Grade 09; James Wilkinson [09/03/1912 to 06/19/1914] Junior & Senior Year, it would seem that he did graduate from Saint Louis College [name of school at that time]. There is a picture of James on his transcript; this means he graduated from St. Louis College. The records do not show the names of parents, birthdates, reason for leaving. They just indicate the information that I am sending to you.

    • From an e-mail dated 25 Jun 2008 from Carolyn Wilkinson: "There certainly is confusion on the Jr. etc - Jim's Dad [born 1897] apparently was a Jr. but since his Dad died when he was so young he dropped the Jr. When my Jim was born [1927] he became a Jr. When our son was born Grandpa was still alive so he became JWW III - and of course when our grandson was born he became JWW IV."
