3. JOHN CRUMPLER c1784-23 FEB. 1830 DEED 12/368
MARRIED:

(1810) MARGARET GURLEY 1794-1869

John Crumpler died Feb. 23, 1830 and his death is listed in the Fayetteville Observer. Margaret Gurley was from Wayne County and is identified in a Wayne County Deed. There is no mistake about who she is. Deed book 12 page 368 has information about John Crumpler. This is a Sampson County deed. There is quite a bit of information about this John Crumpler in the deed books, all of it can not be understood. He apparently went broke about 1828 and lost some property. It appears that one of his friends bought it back and gave it to him.

John Crumpler Sr. married Sarah Holmes....I did not know that and I agree that it is correct. I have reviewed some family names.

373 From an e-mail dated 25 Jun 2008 from Carolyn Wilkinson: "There certainly is confusion on the Jr. etc - Jim's Dad [born 1897] apparently was a Jr. but since his Dad died when he was so young he dropped the Jr. When my Jim was born [1927] he became a Jr. When our son was born Grandpa was still alive so he became JWW III - and of course when our grandson was born he became JWW IV." Wilkinson, James William (I175)

Aloha, kaua e Craig: Records that I have going back so far are not complete. All I have are the following: Albert Wilkinson [09/03/1912 to 06/06/1913] Junior Year - Grade 11; Charles Wilkinson [09/05/1922 to 06/15/1923] Freshman Year - Grade 09; James Wilkinson [09/03/1912 to 06/19/1914] Junior & Senior Year, it would seem that he did graduate from Saint Louis College [name of school at that time]. There is a picture of James on his transcript; this means he graduated from St. Louis College. The records do not show the names of parents, birthdates, reason for leaving. They just indicate the information that I am sending to you.

378 General Stark lived to his 94th year and died 8 May 1822, reportedly the last surviving Continental general of the Revolution.

"Thus living, not for himself alone, but for his country, the veteran Stark passed into the wane of life, ever taking, as long as life lasted, a lively interest in every incident in our country's history. At length, suffering from the effects of a paralytic shock at the extreme age of 93 years, 8 months and 22 days, the old hero departed this life on Wednesday, the 8 May, 1822.

"The Friday following his death, his remains were interred with military honors, in a cemetery he had enclosed upon his own farm, a large concourse of people being in attendance, to witness the imposing ceremony, and to pay their last respects over the body of the man who had contributed so largely in filling 'the measure of his country's glory.'

"The cemetery is situated upon a commanding bluff upon the east bank of the Merrimack, and over his remains his family have placed a plain shaft of granite, indicative alike of his simplicity and hardihood, upon which in inscribed 'Maj. General Stark.'

"This simple stone points to his ashes alone, but his deeds are traced in deep-lined characters upon the pages of our country's history, while his memory is engraved upon the hearts of his countrymen.

"Such a name needs no other monument."
