Maria Buchanan Aitken Schwebel Grave - Rookwood Cemetery
Maria Buchanan Aitken Schwebel Grave - Rookwood Cemetery
Burial at Rookwood Independent Cemetery, New South Wales. Buried 8 Sep 1885. Inscription reads: "In Memory of Maria Buchanan the beloved wife of Adam Schwöbel who died 8th Sept 1885 aged 35 years. Also Ernest infant son of the above, died 19th Oct 1885 aged 4 months."

The verse is from the hymn "Submissive to Thy Will My God" by Thomas Haweis 1734-1820. The hymn is as follows:

Submissive to thy will, my God,
I all to thee resign,
And bow before thy chastening rod,
I mourn, but not repine.

Why should my foolish heart complain,
Where wisdom, truth, and love
Direct the stroke, inflict the pain
And point to joys above?

How short are all my sufferings here,
How needful every cross;
Away, my unbelieving fear
Nor call my gain my loss.

Then give, dear Lord, or take away,
I'll bless thy sacred name;
My Jesus, yesterday, to-day,
Forever is the same.

Rachel Morris King - Crypt
Rachel Morris King - Crypt
I was born and grew up in Hawaii. Whenever we visited San Francisco, my grandmother would always want to go and visit the grave of her mother (Rachel Morris King). As kids we never wanted to do this, and never went to the grave: kids don't like visiting graves. My grandmother would lament that once she'd died, nobody would remember where her mother, Rachel, was buried.

But my grandmother did not foresee the internet, and how it helps us to research everything -- including our ancestry. I became interested in genealogy simply because I wanted to find Rachel's grave.

I found it, and my wife and I visited it for the first time today. We brought red carnations.

The Oak Tree Where Samuel Crumpler Was Gored to Death By A Bull
The Oak Tree Where Samuel Crumpler Was Gored to Death By A Bull
The initials "SC" with a coffin underneath, and below that the date "1849" still visible, carved in the oak tree where Samuel Crumpler died. The tree stands in Underdaykers at Lytchett Matravers, the dialectal word for Hundred Acres, which loosely describes the size of that field.

According to Beau Parke, "On a historical note, Samuel Crumpler - then aged 55 - was gored to death against a tree at Underdaykers in 1849, by his own bull. A hole was later bored into the tree by someone, about three feet up, and the sap ran out of the hole over a period of time, creating a black stain down the bark. We youngsters used to believe that the hole was where the bull had actually gored his victim, and that the sap was his blood. The tree is known as 'Bull Oak', with a suitable inscription thereon."

A part of Beau Parke's poem Underdaykers (1935):

"Then next we found the ancient tree where Farmer Crumpler died
when charged by his ferocious bull, and no one heard his cries,
It pinned his master to the trunk! - and we, with bated breath,
imagined that sheer terror as it gored him then to death."
